Forbes has listed the Top 10 reasons why Americans are not shopping. http://www.forbes.com/opinions/2008/11/19/consumer-debt-savings-oped-cx_nr_1120roubini.html?feed=rss_popstories
The simplest and top reason is....
1. The U.S. consumer is shopped-out, having spent for the last few years well above his means.
What I find interesting in the list are the internal and external forces that will inevitably shift a certain level of consciousness. I know that there will be plenty of gloves, TVs, toys, games and clothes landing under the tree. I also know that the number of people committing to and pledging handmade is increasing in leaps and bounds....check it out! http://www.buyhandmade.org/. This is where we need to focus our attention. There needs to be serious contraction of the GNP over the next 4 years and what that means is OPPORTUNITY for those who really understand that it is NOT going to be business as usual anymore.
Although I swing between concern about my own future as a the primary income earner and single mom and the thrill of what is possible for us, I know deep in my heart that this ecomomic situation is going to bring me far more benefits that the old way things were done. I believe my son will learn some real skills he might not have otherwise learned... and he will have these for many years to come.
So, keep you eyes and ears open for the new needs that are emerging. There is a sweet spot in it for all of us!
